• 1) How long has the LASIK surgeon been performing surgery? This is an obvious question to determine his/her degree of overall experience.

Desirable Response:

At least three years. The more the better.

• 2) How many LASIK surgeries has he/she performed? This does not include mechanical procedures such as RK ALK and AK.
  

Desirable Response:

At least 500

• 3) Over the past year, how many LASIK procedures have been performed?

Desirable Response:

At least 250

• 4) How many procedures has he/she performed of the type specifically that you need using the same equipment that will be used for your LASIK surgery?

Desirable Response:

At least 100

• 5) What percentage of patients that he/she operated on have achieved vision acuity of 20/40 or better using the Snellen Uncorrected Visual Acuity method of measurement?

Desirable Response:

At least 90% or better

• 6) What percentage of patients that he/she operated on achieved a visual acuity of 20/20 as determined by the Snellen method of measurement?

Desirable Response:

At least 50%. 50% is the normal percentage for achieving perfect vision from LASIK surgery. This percentage is determined by the Quality Standards Advisory Committee (QSAC).

• 7) What percentage of LASIK patients who were operated on developed complications that could not be fixed?

Desirable Response:

3% or less. The QSAC considers this to be the normal percentage of unresolved complications.

• What is the percentage of LASIK surgery patients that you considered not suitable for the procedure?

Desirable Response:

Sometimes the LASIK surgeon may not have this data. As long as he/she does not say none, then you are ok. A good LASIK surgeon will not operate on all candidates.

• 9) Has the LASIK surgeon had any malpractice cases against him/her that exceeded $30,000. If yes, get details.

Desirable Response:

Not more then 1 in 500. This means 99.8% of his/her patients did not file a malpractice lawsuit with a lawyer. Also, there should be no more then 5 lawsuits filed against the prospective LASIK surgeon over the past 5 years.

• 10) How was the worse LASIK surgery outcome handled?

Desirable Response:

All LASIK surgeons have had at least one undesirable outcome. Did the surgeon handle it in a professional way such as seek advice outside his/her area of expertise in order to resolve the problem. If the LASIK surgeon says he/she has never had a problem or undesirable outcome, this surgeon is probably lying and it is time for you to look elsewhere for a LASIK surgeon.

Conclusion:

These are the most important questions you should ask of a potential LASIK surgeon. You have a right to know the answer to each of these questions. Also, if you feel uncomfortable in any way, even though the above questions were answered with the desirable response, look else where for a LASIK surgeon. This is what I call an intuitive sense. More subjective but still very important.
